I was hesitant to slip out from under my Surefire security blanket. Surefire has been the gold standard in the tactical community for flashlight reliability and functionality and continues to this day to offer good stuff.

The Streamlight Protac Railmount HL-X grabbed my attention because the design seemed similar to the Surefire m600 Scout Light, but can be purchased for around a quarter of the cost (around $120). The Streamlight Railmount HL-X puts out 1,000 lumens of light and possesses a blinding hot center, as well as a bright, wide throw. The light mounts on a standard 1913 Picatinny rail and comes with 2 caps so you can choose between a push button or a pressure pad. Only time will tell regarding the reliability of the Streamlight, but so far the light seems to be tough and trustworthy.
